Bell's Palsy

- a disorder in cranial nerve VII
- also known as: facial paralysis/palsy
- only motor part is affected
- common in 20-40 years old
- unilateral
Causes
unknown
Risk Factors
a. vascular ischemia
b.viral disease (herpes)
c. autoimmune disease
d. tumors, stokes, DM, head injury
Clinical Manifestation
a. drooping of mouth with drooling
b. sagging of face
c. pain sensation
- in the face, eyes, back of ears
d. lagopthalmus -inability to close eyelids
e. inability to wrinkle forehead
f. inability to eat at the affected side
Managenent
Pharmacologic
a. Analgesic
b. Corticosteroids
Nursing Management
a. offer small frequent feeding
b. provide eye care
-use of artificial tears
c. advice patient to close eyelids periodically and gently
d. put eye patch or sunglasses if outdoors
e. facial sling
f. gentle massage of face (upward)
g. facial exercises
-wrinkling of foreheads
-blowing of cheeks
-whistling
