Reye's Syndrome

-common among children 1-18 years old
- Dr. R. Douglas Reye
- acute form of encephalitis with accompanying fatty infiltration of thr liver, heart, lungs, pancreas, and skeletal muscles
Causes
unknown
Risk Factors
1. occurs after a viral disease is treated with an Aspirin
2. viruses like Varicella and Influenza
Manifestation
1-2 weeks after taking Aspirin
1. lethargy
2. vomiting
3. anorexia
4. agitation
5. confusion
6. combativness
7. increase liver enzymes
-AST/SGOT
-ALT/SGPT
8. hypothrombinemia
- delayed PT and PTT
9. hypoglycemia
10. ellevated blood amonia level
Management
1. suppoting respiratory function
- oxygen therapy
2. control hypoglycemia
3. reduce brain edema
