Brain Tumor

Cause
SOL- space occupying lesion
a. primary- arises from brain and supporting cells
b. secondary- tumors metastasize in other parts
Classifications
a. Glioma- involves the neuroglia ( supporting cells)
e.g; astrocytoma, oligodendroglioma, microglioma
b. Meningioma
- involves the arachnoid cells
c. Neuroma
- involves the brain structures
d. Hmangioma
- arising from blood vessels
Manifestation
a. change in LOC
- if occurs in morning, suspects for SOL
b.classical triad of brain tumors
1. headache
2. nausea
3. vomiting
c.papilledema
-choked disk
-blurring of vision
d. seizures
e. focal weakness (hemiparesis)
f.sensory disturbance
g. language disturbance
-aphasia
h. coordination disturbance
-ataxia
i. visual disturbance
-diplopia
Management
Surgical
a.craniotomy
b. craniectomy- removal of a portion of the brain
c. surgical resection
d. adjuvant surgery
-radiation
-chemotherapy
Nursing Management
a. post-op care
